What's in it
- 1L IV fluids
- Electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium)
- Vitamin C
A step up from plain fluids for days when you have been sweating more than drinking. Electrolyte amounts are set by the clinician after your screening, not picked from a menu. The vitamin C is a modest amount, included because people ask for it, not because it promises anything.
Often a good fit
- Post-exercise rehydration
- Recovering from a hot weekend
- Travel days
Skip it, or ask first, if
- You take potassium-sparing medication without clinician review
- You have kidney disease
- You are under 18, pregnant, or breastfeeding, unless a clinician has specifically cleared it.
In the chair
Plan on about 45 minutes once the drip starts, plus ten minutes of screening before. A nurse places a small cannula, usually in the forearm or hand, checks on you throughout, and removes it when the bag is done. You can read, work, nap, or talk to whoever came with you. Most people walk out and get on with their day.
